Hey everyone, welcome to the Spinoso Podcast! Today, I want to dive into a topic that’s often overlooked but incredibly important: the downside of being a good person in business. Now, don’t get me wrong—I believe you should always strive to be a good person in life. You should absolutely have ethics and always do the right thing, as my friend Andy Frisella often says. But here’s the catch: sometimes, what we think is the right thing in business is actually the wrong thing, and it can lead to a lot of frustration, stress, and grief.

I’m talking to that entrepreneur or business owner out there who’s giving it their all—investing blood, sweat, and tears into creating an amazing workplace and opportunities for personal development and great compensation for their team. But here’s the reality check: an ace and a joker is always a bad hand. It doesn’t matter how hard you work or how pure your intentions are. If someone on your team chooses to be a loser, they’re going to lose 100% of the time.

Having jokers in your business will absolutely kill your business and drain you. But let me be clear: the vast majority of people who have worked for me have been amazing. I love my team and would never badmouth them. Most likely, the people who work for you are great too, and they deserve your investment and loyalty. But the jokers? They don’t. You aren’t obligated to let them leverage your kindness against you.

You owe it to your team to have a no-joker policy. Cut them loose—gently but firmly. That’s what good people do. It’s actually the right thing to do, and it may be the wake-up call they need.
