Today’s Medical Monday focuses on the crucial role of core values in your business. Beyond getting patients and providing excellent service, core values are the backbone of your organization. Initially, they reflect you or your co-founders, but as you grow, your executives should also embody and contribute to these values. Living your core values means hiring, firing, reprimanding, and bonusing based on them. At Genesis Lifestyle Medicine, we reinforce our values through daily reminders, bookmarks, and metal cards carried by our staff. Our mnemonic "DIG DEEP and ACT with Integrity" stands for Determination, Innovation, Growth, Accountability, Customer Service, Teamwork, and Integrity, helping our staff remember and embody these values daily.

Consistent communication about core values is key. At companies like Ritz Carlton, daily meetings focus on a core value, reinforcing it deeply into the company culture. Similarly, at Genesis Lifestyle Medicine, we ensure our core values are discussed in weekly meetings and tied to every aspect of our business, from training to disciplinary actions. We offer opportunities like profit sharing or equity ownership to clinic directors and nurse practitioners, inspired by Chick-fil-A's model. This approach has allowed us to scale from one clinic to 23 in less than five years. If you want to go far, go together; giving opportunities to others creates more for yourself.

Training and communication are crucial for maintaining core values across multiple locations. We have three training centers where new employees learn our core values and standard operating procedures. Even with just one clinic, you can train new staff alongside existing ones who embody your values. Scaling across state lines requires extra effort, like ensuring staff from new locations train at established ones for consistency.
