Look, I know. I get it. "Do what you love" is advice we've all heard before, and even though I've made some funny reels mocking it, hear me out. It’s not that the advice is totally wrong—because yeah, if you’re miserable doing what you do, it’s hard to succeed. But here’s the thing: it’s not just about doing what you love. In fact, that mindset can kill your business if you're not careful.
Sure, I love parts of being a medical entrepreneur—changing lives at Genesis Lifestyle Medicine, getting those amazing messages from people who say we’ve made a difference, and helping men improve their health and relationships. But making your business all about you can lead to self-centeredness, just like how "You do you" gets taken too far.
I believe in being a good person and trying to live with purpose. And one day, my pastor quoted a book called The Purpose Driven Life, which starts with four powerful words: "It’s not about you." That simple phrase shifted my entire mindset—because in business, it’s not about you. It’s about your client and what they love.
I could love the idea of selling superhero-themed products, but if my clients think it's ridiculous, I wouldn’t sell a single one. The same applies to your business—if you’re struggling, maybe you’re focusing too much on what you love instead of what your clients love. The key to success is asking the right questions: What does my client want, need, or love?
Take Steve Jobs, for example. Apple’s success wasn’t about his personal tech preferences—it was about creating products that people loved, with a focus on design and user experience. That’s why Apple is valued at over $3 trillion today. So remember: it's not about you. It’s about them.
